Spotlight on: Irene Christofferson

On January 11, 2017 Irene celebrated her 96th birthday with us in high style.  After a surprise serenade from Shifty Sailor Jim Lightner, we presented her with 96 cupcakes–to enjoy after her FIT class, of course.  Over cupcakes and coffee, Irene reflected on her 17+ years as a member, and called the celebration the “happiest day since her wedding!”  She recounted the story of how she turned losing one of her most prized possessions while gardening–a diamond ring featuring not only her engagement diamond, but one for each of her children–into a lifestyle upgrade.  Rather than replace the ring, she decided to put some of the money towards a membership for herself and her husband at Island Athletic Club.  Since joining in 1999, Irene has visited the Club a whopping 3,566 times, and is a beloved regular in Lila’s FIT class.  She and her late husband Chris were both members of our “Free Dues Club,” (now enrolling those 90 and over), until his passing at the age of almost 92.  When asked about the secrets to her sprightly longevity, Irene sites good chocolate, shredded wheat, white wine, and Island Athletic Club.  Cheers to you, Irene!  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

And the Weber Grill goes to…

Choy-Gee Chu and Chuck Wojtkiewicz!

Throughout the month of May, IAC members who referred friends that joined the Club were entered into a drawing for a new Weber Spirit E-210 grill. Even better, those new members were also entered into a drawing of their own, also for a Weber Spirit E-210.

Congrats, Choy-Gee and Chuck. Here’s to a summer full of workouts–and cookouts, too!

NAMI Raffle Winner: Don Bennett

NAMIWinnerBennett

Congratulations to Don Bennett, winner of our month-long fundraising raffle for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Don won a potted cutting of IAC’s famed rose bush, which sits right outside the club’s main entrance. Plant that rose, give it some water, and watch it grow, Don!

Between the raffle and new member donations, IAC raised more than $1,000 for NAMI in the month of May. We’re proud of team member Kathy Long for leading this fundraising effort. IAC will be cheering Kathy and her family on as they participate in NAMIwalks Washington on June 4.

Congratulations, South Whidbey Stingrays!

IAC is proud to share some very good news: the South Whidbey Stingrays youth swim team coaches and swimmers were selected as co-recipients of this year’s Linda Lee Martens Community Health Hero Award!

Island County’s Community Health Advisory Board (CHAB) and the Board of Health honor individuals who go the extra mile to help others in need. The Linda Lee Martens Community Health Hero Award is named for the late executive secretary of our local Health Department. She was a President of Soroptimists International and a memorable participant in many local activities. She was a hero because she was an ordinary person with an extraordinary love for others.

The Linda Lee Martens Memorial Community Health Hero of Island County Award Criteria recognizes an adult, youth (under age 21 when action completed), or agency that has either directly or indirectly impacted community health. Nominees are selected based on:

  • Category of contribution(s) and relative importance
  • Urgency of the problem(s) addressed
  • Number of people affected
  • Scope of project(s): ($$, people enlisted, time involved, etc.)
  • Results: (actual or realistically expected insofar as being measurable) (If the nominee’s efforts involve(d) professional duties, they should be above/beyond normal expectations.)

Congratulations, Stingrays!
